Do bed bugs live in libraries? The unfortunate answer is yes. You may have seen this on the news. You see, the problem with bed bugs is that they’re spreading. While they were once confined to bedrooms, these pests have now expanded into almost every public area. This includes places like public transport, cinemas, waiting rooms, parks, schools, and libraries.
Why do bed bugs live in libraries and how did they get there? This happens in one of two ways. First, these pests love crawling into bags. They are naturally attracted to dark places, which is why they favour bags. They are also attracted to the smell of humans, which is another reason why they go for bags.
When you’re in the library, you put your bag down for long periods of time. This usually happens when people study or read books, or spend time choosing books. The bugs crawl out of your bag and are left behind in the library. Or a bug crawls into your bag or attaches itself to your clothing.
The other problem is books. People leave library books on their bed side tables. If you have bed bugs, they’re definitely living around these tables. The bugs crawl into the pages, or spine of the books, and you transport them to the library. After thus the cycle begins again because they won’t go away on their own. The bugs that are living in libraries are taken to new homes via books and bags.
So if bed bugs live in libraries and other public places, where are they lurking? These pests mostly live in books, but also library shelves. In fact, any place that is dark and hidden could be infested. They may also be living in places like sofas and chairs.
To prevent yourself becoming a victim, here are some things you can do. First, avoid taking your bag to the library. Use a plastic carrier bag to transport books instead. If you do take a bag, then avoid putting it down on the ground for too long. Also check your bag once arriving home.
Along with this, inspect library books you’ve taken out. Remove the dust jacket and look for these pests. Carefully look down the spine. Also flip through the book while holding it upside down. Check where the pages meet the spine. This is where bed bugs are most likely to hide and then hitchhike into your home.
Avoid leaving library books on your bed side table. If there are bed bugs in the book, they’ll crawl out and end up in your bed. Leave them in the kitchen, or another room. What you can also do is place your library books in a plastic Ziploc bag. This prevents the bugs from escaping out into your bedroom and becoming a nuisance. One final thing you can do is tell your friends. Do your part to spread the word. Let them know that bed bugs live in libraries, and that they need to watch out.
