Bed bugs are probably the biggest pest nuisance in the UK. Yes, cockroaches, rodents, and birds are all a problem, but nothing compares to bed bugs. But when you look at this issue, it’s mostly homeowners who have to deal with this problem. That being said, many businesses also stand a high chance of getting infested. So what businesses are at risk, and what should you know about this issue?
As we’ve said, this problem usually originates at home. People’s homes are infested with bed bugs. These bugs crawl onto their clothing. The person then goes out into the world, and their unwelcome hitch hikers are left behind. What this means is that any business that deal with people may get bed bugs and the public can pick up bed bugs from your premises.
To be more specific, if people spend time sitting in your business, then you should be cautious. The reason why we say this is simple. Sitting gives bed bugs time to crawl off the infested person. What this means is that businesses like restaurants, cafes and pubs are at risk of getting bed bugs. You can also add cinemas, hair salons etc. to list this. If you have a waiting room, you could also be a target and could benefit from bed bug management tips. Anywhere people are sitting around in your business is a potential hit spot. Despite this, the chances of this happening are quite low. Yes, someone could bring the insects into your business, but this is unlikely to happen.
The businesses that are most at risk are hospitality businesses. This is where bed bugs generally originate, before being carried into our homes. This is simply because of the high volume of people passing through these businesses. It’s hard to keep places such as hotels bed bug free.
So basically hotels, B&Bs and other hospitality businesses are all more likely to pick up bed bugs. But what can these businesses do about this problem? First be aware of it. Understand that bed bugs could be a hazard in your business. Second, train housekeeping staff to keep an eye out for the problem. They should look for dark brown stains on bedding, and also spots of blood. Third, listen to customer complaints. If people complain, do not ignore the issue. Ignoring the issue will only make it worse.
Finally, accept that you’ll have to employ a pest control company. The best thing that we can do for you is provide proactive heat treatment. We can come in and treat your rooms before a problem arises. This way any bed bug infestation is nipped in the bud. While this may seem like an unnecessary cost remember this: a hospitality business relies on its reputation. The last thing you want is your reputation ruined by these pests.
