In pest control circles, summer is known as “bed bug season.” This is simply because the rate of call outs for bed bugs increases sharply during this time. But why is this? Well, there are two simple reasons why bed bugs are a bigger problem during summer.
First of all, bed bugs can be a problem at any time of the year. This issue is not strictly limited to summer. That being said, most insects increase their activity during warmer weather. Pests do not like the cold and die easily in cooler weather. This is why they become more active in summer.
The second reason why summer is known as bed bug season is because people go on holiday and pick up bed bugs from public places. The way that most people get bug bugs is by bringing them back from their holidays. You stay over at a hotel that is infested and bugs hitch a ride back home in your luggage. Aside from that, they also crawl into your clothing. You get home and the next thing you know, you’re infested.
So what can you do to survive bed bug season? To begin with, you need to know how to identify these bugs and never do DIY bed bug control. The biggest and most obvious sign is that you’re getting bitten. Are you waking up with large red welts on your upper body? Are these bites in a straight line or zigzag pattern? If the answer is yes, then it’s probably bed bugs.
Other signs include red spots on your bedding. These red spots are drops of blood that spill when the bed bug feeds. Also look for brown spots. This is bed bugs faeces that have been smeared on your bedding. You may also pick up on a musty odour. This smell is clearly detectable when large numbers of bed bugs are present.
If you think you have these bugs, then immediately wash your bedding. Also vacuum the room thoroughly. You may also want to leave your mattress outside for a few days. In extreme cases you may want to consider getting a new mattress. There are also pesticides that you can buy from the shops.
If none of this has an effect, then you may want to seek professional help and get more tips on how to avoid picking up bed bugs. Our team is ready and prepared for bed bug season. The best way to deal with this is by employing heat treatments. This is now the go-to method for bed bug extermination. It works by placing a heat generating machine in the room.
This gradually heats up the area. Bed bugs are highly susceptible to extreme temperatures and eventually die. This biggest advantage of this method is that it kills the bed bugs along with their nymphs and eggs. Another huge advantage is that it works quickly and does not use chemicals or pesticides.
