Bed bugs are notoriously difficult to get rid of. This is why it’s critical that you do everything you can to avoid picking up bed bugs in the first place. But don’t panic, the following post will give you some great tips, and outline what you can do to minimise the risk of bringing these insects into your home. Read over these tips carefully and commit them to memory. Trust us, the discomfort you’ll go through if you pick up these bugs makes paying attention to detail worthwhile.
What you first have to understand is that their name can be misleading. Just because they are called “bed bugs”, this doesn’t mean they are only found in beds. For example, there are now increasing reports of bed bugs being spotted on public transport. This includes all forms of transport including buses, trains, and taxis. Theatres and cinemas are also nice dark, warm places for bed bugs to thrive, with an ample supply of human to hitch hike home with.
You may occasionally pick up bed bugs from outdoors. Although bed bugs are not generally found in nature, this can still happen. For example, bed bugs may be lurking in the grass or on the beach, having been shed by a picnicker. In this scenario they may crawl onto you while you’re walking or sitting outdoors.
Many people pick up bed bugs on holiday. These bugs are often found in hotel rooms, hostels and guest houses. In most cases, they are located in the folds and creases of the mattress. You can also find them in the base and behind the headboard. Bed bugs also like to hide around furniture near the bed such as nightstands and chairs. You may also find them behind picture frames and electrical switch plates.
If you’ve used public transport during the day, you should also check for bed bugs after coming home. It’s a good idea to get undressed in the bathroom and check your clothing at the same time. Also, avoid putting your clothes on the bed, the floor, or a chair. Leave them in the bathroom, or put them straight in the laundry. You can also avoid picking up bed bugs by checking your clothing after going on a walk or sitting outside.
If your children have been staying away from home on a sleepover, make sure to thoroughly check their bags and toys for bed bugs when they return. Put their clothing on for a high temperature wash and tumble dry. Heat kills bed bugs, so this is an effective strategy.
Also, pay attention when packing your bags at the end of a holiday or trip. Most people get bed bugs by bringing them back in their luggage. Before packing, inspect each item of clothing and check for bed bugs. Turn them inside out and carefully look for bed bugs. Next, examine any other items in your luggage closely. Search through every compartment and section, and turn these inside out if you can as well.
