One of the nice things about heat treatments is that they are relatively easy. When compared to something like fumigation, there’s a lot less prep work. That being said, this doesn’t mean you don’t have to put in some effort. Unfortunately, there are a few things you’ll have to do when preparing for heat treatment. To help you out with this, here are some dos and don’ts for your first heat treatment.
Here are some things that you should definitely address before a heat treatment…
While heat treatments are far better than fumigation, they do take time. What this means is that you’ll need to be out of the house for at least 9-12 hours. This is something to take into consideration when preparing for heat treatment. Make sure that you have something to fill those hours.
Do not forget to unplug all electronics including televisions, stereos, computers and appliances. It’s also a good idea that you remove them from the room or cover these up, in order to prevent damage.
While heat treatments are 100% effective at removing bed bugs, it’s still a good idea to get a follow up. There’s a chance that the pests could return from the outside, and you’ll want to know if this is happening. If they do come back, then you’ll want to look into something like pest proofing.
Pets are relatively safe from heat treatments, and may even be safe from bed bug attacks. This means that you may not necessarily have to remove them from the property. It may be enough if you pet is in the back garden, or in a different part of the house. Just note that fish can be harmed by heat treatments. If your pet fish are in the room being treated, then you’ll have to protect the fish from heat by moving them.
When preparing for heat treatment, anything that can melt should be removed from the room so bed bugs can be removed completely. This includes things like chocolate, and anything made from wax. Basically, anything that could be damaged by heat must be removed. Along with this, also remove pressurised products like deodorants and so on. Finally, do not leave anything flammable in the room.
Understand that books and papers are not immune to heat. There is still a chance they could be damaged. For this reason, it’s important that you remove all books and papers from the room.
