Bed bugs are an absolute nightmare. If you have these pests you first need to deal with your bed. The reason why is simple: bed bugs prefer to live close to their source of food – which is YOU. This means they are most likely to be found in and around your bed. So, how do you deal with your bed and solve this problem? Here are a few steps which we recommend.
First of all, many people panic and throw out their mattress and then think they have to quarantine their home. This is sheer idiocy and should never be done. You have to understand that the bugs could be living in places other than your bed. This means that throwing out your mattress will have no effect whatsoever. It only means that you’ll have to buy a new bed.
No, to deal with your bed, you first need to strip it completely. Wash everything including sheets, duvet covert, and pillow cases. This needs to be done at minimum50°C for at least one hour. This is the temperature at which bed bugs die. Also closely inspect your duvet and pillows for these bugs. If possible, wash these also.
Next, vacuum the entire room as thoroughly as possible, no matter which room you find bed bugs in. Also, inspect your mattress and bed frame. Use a torch and check every inch for these pests. Pay special attention to creases and seams.
Then, move your mattress and frame. Vacuum the area beneath the bed. At this point, you may also want to cover your mattress with a bed bug proof mattress cover. This is basically a plastic cover that you can slide your mattress into. The purpose of this cover is to prevent bed bugs from getting into your mattress. Also, if they are already in the cover, it prevents them from getting out. If you can, open up your bed frame and check if there are bugs inside of it.
You’ll also need to search the area around your bed to prepare an infected room. The first place to look is cracks and crevices. Depending on their size, these could be harbouring bed bugs or their eggs. This is why it’s a good idea to seal up these up.
If you have a headboard, then look behind this as well. Also search behind picture frames, as well as around side tables, under lamps and so on. With any luck, you should find the bed bugs and can then kill them.
In some cases, especially when caught early, these steps are enough to eradicate bed bugs. If not, you will need to go on to plan B. Talk to a professional pest control company about the problem.
