Should You Throw Away Your Bed Or Mattress If You Have Bed Bugs?

Extreme Bed Bug Control

Published: April, 2023

Should you throw away your bed if it’s infested with bed bugs? This is a question we’re often asked. The truth is that you may be tempted to do this. But guess what? Tossing out an infested bed is not necessary. Nope, there are far better alternatives as you’re about to see.

Why it’s a bad idea to throw away your bed

Getting rid of a bed bug infested bed is 100% understandable. First of all, these pests can drive you bonkers. After two or three weeks of being bitten, most people begin to lose their mind. This is probably the state you’re in now. If that’s true, then take a deep breath and relax. You don’t have to throw away your bed.

You’re probably thinking that we’re going to tell you to clean or wash your bedding. No, you don’t have to do that either. In fact, you’re probably already cleaned, vacuumed and washed till the cows came home. Maybe you’ve also tried one of those bug bombs.

If you have, don’t worry. Both of these methods are completely ineffective. Bed bugs hide in the cracks and crevices surrounding your bed. They also live inside your mattress completely out of sight. Washing will have zero effect. As for poisons, most of these bugs are completely immune to poisons. Especially the type you buy at the shop.

Is there a better way and what is it?

So what’s the solution then? Should you throw away your bed? No, what you want to do is call your local pest controller and ask about heat treatments. These treatments are the gold standard for getting rid of bed bugs.

How they work is simple. Basically, pests like bed bugs are extremely susceptible to extreme temperatures. Once it gets warm enough, they die, along with their eggs and nymphs. This is exactly what a heat treatment machine does. It’s essentially a giant heater which gradually warms up the room. This heat is maintained for a certain period of time, and the bed bugs die.

The biggest benefit of this is that no pesticides or poisons are used. This makes it a lot safer for humans. You don’t have to live with your personal possessions being coated in pesticide. Preparing for these treatments is also a lot easier. Plus, the treatment is completed in a matter of hours – far faster than with fumigation.

Ultimately, if you’re infested with bed bugs, it doesn’t mean you have to throw away your bed but if you want to, throw furniture away safely. With the price of furniture these days, this is ludicrous anyway. Hiring a pest controller is far cheaper, so call us up today and ask about heat treatments.
