How Do You Know What Insect Is Biting You?

Extreme Bed Bug Control

Published: June, 2023

Trying to figure out which insect is biting you? Doing this can be tricky. What you have to understand is that, if you’re getting bitten indoors, it’s probably only one of two insects. These are bed bugs and fleas. Mosquitoes are active at this time of year as well, but their bites tend to be larger than other insects and therefore distinguishable. That being said, the insect biting you could be something else entirely. To help you figure this out, here’s what you need to know about this subject.

Which insect is biting you?

Fleas and bed bugs each have similar bites, but with a few key differences. To start with, flea bites are usually concentrated on the lower half of your body. These pests live low to the ground and will bite your feet, ankles, and calves. Their bites appear as small red bumps which are raised. They also appear in random patterns.

On the other hand, bed bugs will bite you on the upper half of your body. This can include places like your torso, arms, legs, and even your face. These bites are slightly larger and are far more itchy. They also appear in lines and groupings and produce histamine.

That being said, there’s a good chance that the insect biting you is something else entirely. Many insects are often mistaken for bed bugs. Most insects can bite. For example, the insect biting you could be a scabies mite, midge, gnat, red ant or, as we mentioned, mosquitoes. Cockroaches have even been known to bite humans. You may have been outdoors and got bitten, but not realised until you were at home.

Steps to take to avoid insects biting you indoors

One of the best solutions is to install screens on your bedroom windows. Most insects are attracted to light (although some, like cockroaches, are attracted to dark) and the carbon dioxide humans give off. This is why they make their way towards houses and enter in through windows. You then go to bed and the insect comes out and bites you. Screens on your windows will help to solve this issue.

If these things do not solve the problem, and you are sure you are being bitten indoors and in certain areas of the body, then consider bed bugs or fleas. If the problem persists, you may want to consider pest control services. They can use heat treatments to remove these pests.

Also make sure to clean out any places where insects could be hiding. Start by cleaning underneath your bed and under other pieces of furniture. You should also make a thorough inspection of your cupboards. Remove everything from your cupboards and check that no insects are hiding away.
