What you have to realise is that many bugs bite. What this means is that if you have bites, you may not necessarily have bed bugs. For example, these pests are commonly confused with fleas. The simple reason why, is because both insects bite.

So, to start off, closely examine your bites. The easiest way of distinguishing between flea bites and bed bug bites is by looking at where you’re being bitten. Fleas mostly bite on the lower half of your body. These include places like your feet, ankles and calves. Bed bugs bite on the upper half, such as your torso, arms, neck and face.

Next, look at your sleeping area. Most signs of bed bugs are found in and around where you sleep. They can even live inside your mattress. Remove your bedding and carefully examine every inch of it. What you’re looking for are dark brown stains. These stains are caused by bed bug faeces that have been ground into the bedding.

Something else you’ll want to look for are blood stains. These occur when bed bugs are feeding. As they drink your blood, drops of it will end up on the sheets. What you also want to look for is bed bug skin. This will look like bits of brown leaves, or thin paper.

What you should also look for are actual bed bugs. These pests are small – about the size of an apple seed. They usually hide in the cracks and crevices around your bed but they live in other places too. The first place to look is your mattress. Carefully examine the folds and creases. Also look behind your headboard and underneath the bed. Other places to search include bed side tables, especially beneath bed lamps.
