When you have a whole house or whole room treatment for bed bugs, you might be concerned that damage could be caused Equipment will need to be brought into your home and either heat or chemicals used. But will your personal and household items be affected by the treatment? People are rightly concerned about all of this. You will want to know whether bed bug treatment can cause damage to your home or possessions.
The answer to this question is yes and no. There are two main types of bed bug treatment. One is fumigation and the other is heat treatments. Let’s look at fumigation first. It involves the spraying of pesticides.
The problem with these methods is that they can actually cause damage which is why there’s so many do’s and don’ts. These chemicals and pesticides are highly dangerous and corrosive. If they make contact with household goods, then yes, damage may be caused.
This is why chemical treatments require a long preparation period and why heat treatments are better than fumigation. You’ll have to pack up most of your things and remove anything that could potentially be damaged. It’s almost like moving to a new home in a sense.
And don’t forget that you’ll have to unpack everything once the treatment is over. You may also have to vacate your home for an extended period of time. This could be longer than a day. Also, don’t forget that these chemicals can be extremely harmful to your health.
But this is why we encourage our clients to seek out heat treatments. This is an alternative to chemical method and is becoming more and more popular. There are many reasons for this. The first is that the method does not use any chemicals or pesticides. Yes, you might find that hard to believe, but this method of bed bug treatment uses no chemicals at all.
The technique works with heat only. A heat treatment machine is placed in the affected area. This slowly heats up the area. Eventually, it becomes so hot that bed bugs can no longer survive. Another benefit is that everything is killed. This includes the bed bugs, along with their eggs. This means that the next generation of bugs does not hatch.
The biggest benefit, of course, is that there is a lot less preparation involved and it can treat other items such as toys. You will have to pack away sensitive items, but not to the degree that you have to with chemical methods. Only things that are adversely affected by heat, such as guitars and candles. The bottom line is that, with chemicals, there is always the chance of household goods being damaged. With heat treatments, this risk is greatly minimized, or reduced altogether.
