Do You Get Bed Bugs Across The World In All Countries?

Extreme Bed Bug Control

Published: January, 2023

Dealing with bed bugs is an absolute nightmare. In fact, almost 90% of the calls we receive are from people who are struggling with these pests. If you’ve ever had to deal with these monsters, you’ll know what a pain they can be. But this leads us to an interesting question. Is there any place on planet earth which is free of these pests? What we mean is, is there a place can go that is totally free of bed bugs. Unfortunately, the short answer is NO. It’s possible to find bed bugs across the world, no matter where you are.

Bed bugs across the world and beyond

What you have to understand about these bugs is that they do not see borders, or nationalities. The only thing that bed bugs see is food i.e. humans. This is why you find bed bugs across the world, particularly in places with warmer weather. Seriously, these bugs are found everywhere from East to West.

What’s even more interesting, is that these bugs are even found in space. We’re completely 100% serious. Take this with a grain of salt, but according to NASA bed bugs have now infested the international space station. Yes, a recent news article reported that bed bugs were found in the toilet of the ISS. Funnily enough, it was reported that these bugs were brought aboard by the French crew who didn’t protect their luggage.

Bed bugs in history

That being said, seeing that we find bed bugs across the world and in public places, you may be wondering where they first occurred. Scientists have determined that bed bugs first originated in caves around the Mediterranean. They were first recorded historically by the ancient Greeks and Romans. Believe it or not, Aristotle was actually one of the first people who wrote about these pests.

Back then it was actually believed that these bugs had medicinal value. They were used as a treatment for snake bites, ear infections, and even hysteria. Thankfully, we now know that this is rubbish. Since those days, there has been a spread of bed bugs across the world.

When it comes to us, bed bugs were first mentioned in England in 1583. The common belief is that these bugs were introduced to Britain through imported wood. This wood was brought over to rebuild after the Great Fire of London. Once again, this shows that you need to be extra careful when returning home after an overseas holiday.
