Scientists have determined that bed bugs first originated in caves around the Mediterranean. They were first recorded historically by the ancient Greeks and Romans. Believe it or not, Aristotle was actually one of the first people who wrote about these pests.

Back then it was actually believed that these bugs had medicinal value. They were used as a treatment for snake bites, ear infections, and even hysteria. Thankfully, we now know that this is rubbish. Since those days, there has been a spread of bed bugs across the world.

When it comes to us, bed bugs were first mentioned in England in 1583. The common belief is that these bugs were introduced to Britain through imported wood. This wood was brought over to rebuild after the Great Fire of London. Once again, this shows that you need to be extra careful when returning home after an overseas holiday.
