Do Households Continue To Get Bed Bugs In Winter?

Extreme Bed Bug Control

Published: December, 2022

Bed bugs can drive you up the wall and beyond. Out at all the pests which exist, these are by far the worst. The reason is simply because they cause extreme distress. If you’ve dealt with these pests, you’ll know exactly what we mean. Being covered in bed bug bites is no laughing matter. Anyone currently experiencing this might be wondering, what happens to bed bugs in winter. What we mean is, will you finally find relief, once it gets colder?

What happens to bed bugs in winter?

Unfortunately, the answer is no. You see, during winter, bed bugs are pretty much as active as they are in summer. What does happen though, is that their activity slows down ever so slightly. This means they may not spread as quickly as they do in summer bed bug season. The point is that you are not going to be free of these pests just because it’s winter.

What you should also take note of, is that you can still pick up bed bugs in winter. Just because it’s freezing outside, doesn’t mean these pests are not hiding away somewhere. If you’re out in nature somewhere, you still need to watch out for these pests. Also keep a look out for bed bugs if you’re using public transport, or in a public building.

Something else you should watch out for is if you’re travelling. For example, maybe you’re travelling to a country where it’s winter. If you’re doing this, just remember that you still have to watch out for bed bugs because they love warmer weather.

How should you deal with a bed bug problem?

So, what is the best way to deal with prevalent pests like bed bugs in Winter? Well, the first step is to look out for the signs of these pests. This way you can spot the problem beforehand and take care of it quickly. The main signs of bed bugs are brown, black or red spots on your bedding.

Brown and black spots are caused by bed bug faeces which are dropped on your bed. This is them smeared into your bed, which creates the spot. Red spots are caused by dried blood, which is left behind after the bugs feed.

Something else you may see are dead bed bugs. What you must understand here is that bed bugs are extremely small. Most people think they are a lot larger than they actually are. In fact, these bugs are only about 4-7mm long. Finally, you may see skin which is left which behind after moulting. This skin is usually yellow, or pale white in colour. If you see any of these signs, then you may be experiencing bed bugs in winter. In this case, it’s best to call in an exterminator immediately. The longer you leave the problem the worse it will get.
