Published: January, 2023

Bed bugs can be found almost anywhere. Yes, these pests are spread out across the world. Not only that, there are dozens and dozens of ways to pick up these bugs. It’s not only from going on holiday. No, bed bugs are found on public transport, in public buildings, out in nature, and even at your friend’s house. It’s this last one that we want to speak about today. You see, a bed bug’s best friend are children sleepovers.

Why sleepovers are a bed bug‘s best friend

The problem with sleepovers is that many people get together. What this means is that there is a good chance that at least one person will bring bed bugs from their home. Now, this might sound a bit mean, and it’s not always the case, but it does happen. Not only that, it happens more often than you think.

This is why we say that sleepovers are a bed bug’s best friend. It’s simply because these events give bed bugs a chance to migrate to another house and can even cling to toys. During the night the bed bugs crawl out of the affected child’s luggage and creep into another bag, or duvet.

You don’t have a ban sleepovers to ban bed bugs

You child then returns home and brings the bugs into your house, which can also be picked up at school. Obviously, you’ll want to prevent sleepovers from being a bed bug’s best friend. The best first way to do this is by simply being aware. Be aware that this is an issue, and take steps to combat it. The easiest way is by checking and washing everything that your child took to the sleepover.

When they come home, stop them at the door and remove their bag. They can also change their clothes. These should be checked thoroughly for bed bugs. You may also want to check other items which they took with them. Remember, bed bugs can hide away in things like electronic items, so check these as well.

Next, wash their clothing and a sleeping bag (if they took one) at 60°C for at least 90 minutes. After this, place the clothing in a dryer, and leave them there for about 30 minutes. This should kill any bed bugs which are on your children’s clothing. The point is that you do not want your child to be a bed bug’s best friends. Do not let these bugs get onto your children or harm them. Follow the above instructions, and you’ll be able to prevent this.
