Can You Trick Bed Bugs Into Coming Out Of Hiding And Catch Them?

Extreme Bed Bug Control

Published: February, 2024

Many of you may be wondering if it’s possible to trick bed bugs. For example, can you set traps, or leave bait that will draw them out of their hidey holes? Can you do this and then catch and remove them from your home?

Using carbon dioxide to trick bed bugs out of their hiding places

The answer is that yes, you can trick bed bugs into coming out. They can be coaxed or attracted out of hiding. The easiest way to do this is by setting a carbon dioxide trap. You see, one of the ways these bugs find humans is by detecting carbon dioxide. During the night we exhale large amounts of this gas, and this attracts these pests.

You can use this fact to trick bed bugs. To start with, get yourself a plastic bottle and cut the top half off. Then, invert this top half into the bottom. Next, get about 2 cups of sugar and a packet of yeast. Place this in the bottom of the bottle and add hot water. You’ll want to use about half a teaspoon of yeast.

This mixture creates carbon dioxide which attracts bed bugs. As a final touch get yourself some paper towel. Use tape to wrap this around the bottle and tuck the edges into the open top. Bed bugs might find it hard to climb the smooth surface of the bottle, so this will help.

Tricking bed bugs out of hiding can take several forms

Finally, place the bottle on the floor of your bedroom overnight. Do this near to where you think the bed bugs are hiding. If you’re lucky, this device should trick bed bugs into coming out. They will then climb into the bottle, fall, and be killed.

Something else you can do is place plastic containers beneath the feet of your bed. These should also be wrapped in paper towel so that the bugs can climb in. Fill these containers with the yeast and water mixture. As the bed bugs walk towards your bed, they will encounter this trap, climb in and die. You can also buy specially designed containers to put on the feet of your bed.

If you want something easier, then search online for “bed bug glue traps.” These traps use glue strips to capture the pests. The idea is that they then enter the trap, get stuck on the glue, and die. This method, however, is not very effective, much the same as using tape stuck on skirting boards. Some people use a hair dryer to chase the bed bugs out of hiding places.

Along with this, it’s also possible to purchase electronic versions of the carbon dioxide trap mentioned above. The main product here is called “Night-watch Bed Bug Monitor.” This is a machine which can be set up with different lures. These include heat, pheromones, or carbon dioxide. The bed bugs walk up a ramp and then fall into the machine where they die.

Although these methods may be useful, without 100% eradication from these bed bug killer kits, bed bugs will be lurking somewhere else, or may be in the form of unhatched eggs. For effective bed bug eradication, call our professional services.
