Heat treatments are by far the most effective method for killing bed bugs. There’s just one problem, 99% of our customers want these treatments because of bed bugs in their bed. This raises an interesting question. Are heat treatments only for beds, or can bedding, toys and clothes be bed bugs heat treated as well?
This is a great question. You see, what many people don’t always understand is that bed bugs are not solely confined to your bed. Yes, the vast majority of bed bugs will live in and around your bed. They hide in the mattress, underneath the bed and in fixtures around your bed. (For example, bed bugs are often found behind headboards.)
Along with this, these bugs can also live in other parts of the room, and children’s sleepovers are a bed bug haven. When this happens, these pests prefer areas which are dark, comfortable, and hidden away. What this means is that they often end up in and cupboards and chests of drawers. When this happens bed bugs can infest items of clothing.
Bed bugs hitch hike into your home and hide away in things like pockets, or creases in clothing. Now, the question is, can these items be bed bug heat treated? This simple answer is yes. Just like your bed, these items can also be treated. This is why we recommend that you leave your cupboards and drawers open during heat treatments. This allows the heat to circulate fully, and any bed bugs infesting your clothing are killed.
Something else you should know, is that bed bugs often get on children’s toys. As we’ve said, these pests prefer living in soft and comfortable items. This makes children’s toys the perfect place to stay. Bed bugs mostly target things like teddy bears, cloth books and blocks, and even wooden toys. But can these items be bed bug heat treated? The simple answer is yes. All you have to do is leave these things out during the heat treatment and the bugs will die.
Finally, heat treatments are also effective for bedding. Just like everything else, you simply leave it in the room to be treated. Although, it is recommended that you wash bedding afterwards, just to be sure. The bottom line is that heat treatments are extremely versatile when it comes to destroying bed bugs. No matter where the infestation is, or how severe, this method can take care of the problem. In fact, many things can be heat treated. That being said, it’s always best to consult with your pest controller. They can advise you about certain items, and what the best course of action is.
