Can Bed Bug Infestations Occur in Environments Without Any Beds?

Extreme Bed Bug Control

Published: March, 2024

Where did the phrase “bed bugs” come from? The answer is simple. These pests are mostly found in our beds. But does this mean bed bugs only live in our beds? Can you get bed bug infestations in places where there are no beds?

Where else can bed bug infestations occur?

The unfortunate answer is yes. These pests gravitate towards beds because that’s where the food is. That being said, they can live anywhere. All they need is a source of food. But this isn’t even that important. That’s because bed bugs can go long periods without feeding. In fact, scientists have found that these pests can live up to a year without food.

This ultimately means that bed bugs do not necessarily need to live close to humans. This is why they are now being found in a wide variety of public spaces. We’re now seeing bed bug infestations on public transport and also public buildings like libraries. Bed bugs usually end up on these places after being transported from homes. They then spread by climbing onto other people and can spread to neighbouring homes.

How and when do bed bugs move around?

And don’t forget, these pests are perfectly capable of surviving out in nature. Yes, believe it or not, bed bugs originally lived in caves and fed on bat blood. It was only later that they switched to humans. The point we’re trying to make is that bed bug infestations do not require the presence of beds and can live in rugs and carpets. You can pick up these pests from sitting in a park, going on a hike, or even walking through long grass.

What people also forget is that bed bugs can move about. These pests are able to travel up to 100 feet in a single evening. This means they can live far from your bed. It also means they can live in areas where they are no beds. This can include places like your study, lounge, kitchen, laundry room or garage.

What you should learn from this is that bed bug infestations can happen anywhere. You can still get an infestation, even if there are no beds in the environment. This is something to keep in mind when trying to remove bed bugs from your home when you might not have a bed to deal with.

It’s also why you shouldn’t restrict your search to only the bed. Be sure to check every inch of your home when removing bed bugs. Go through every room carefully. Also check the area around your bed. This should include the furniture in your room, electronics, and anything hanging on the wall. Only by doing this can you be sure to find any bugs.
